Two weeks into my tenure as the CEO of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, I have not had as much time to check my Twitter feed, and so I’ve been spared my typical daily intake of negativity. One immediate benefit: the furrow in my brow has smoothed a bit.
We live amid rampant incivility. Social media food fights are both a cause and an effect of our polarization.
Another benefit of my new role: spending so much time within the walls of the Center. Everywhere you look, there are stories of courage, of selflessness, of people working together to achieve a common goal. It’s one of the best antidotes to the digital shrieking all around us.
The far sides of the spectrum have taken center stage in so many areas of our lives – but not here.
